Welcome!
First Annual EDISTO ULTIMATE CHEF'S CHALLENGE A BIG SUCCESS
The first Annual Edisto Beach Chef's Challenge was held on March 19, 2011, sponsored and organized by McConkey's Jungle Shack. The event successfully raised funds for Learning through Loggerheads (LtL), a local non-profit which mentors low country school children on nature, science, and how to be good stewards of the environment.
James DeCarlo and his team from the Harvest Moon Lowcountry Grill in Ravenel, won the Chef's Challenge. Four other teams competed, each using the four secret ingredients divulged to the chefs only at the beginning of the cookoff. Judges were Natalie Dupree, celebrity chef and cookbook author, Nathan Thurston, Executive chef at the Sanctuary Restaurant on Kiawah, and Edisto's Greg Johnsman, proprietor of Edisto's Geechie Boy Market and Mill.
The day-long event featured non-stop live music by Edisto Gumbo, The Edisto Music Group, and the gospel choir from Allen AME Church. The event culminated with an oyster roast and prize drawings. The big prize of a hand-built kayak went to Kelly McCormick, a school teacher who lives on Edisto.
Special thanks goes out to the staff at McConkey's Jungle Shack, including Jennie Smith, Priscilla Padgett, Marsh Elliot and Tammy Salter, all of whom organized and ran the first of many annual events to continue raising funds and awareness about Learning through Loggerheads.
