Megan

I’m very happy to introduce you all to Megan, who is the head intern of Learning through Loggerheads, this summer. She is an 18-year-old high school graduate and Wyoming native. When she’s not spending her summers at Edisto, Megan rides her horse as much as she can.

I was interested to hear how someone all the way from Wyoming would have heard about this program. She told me that she spends the summers at Edisto with her grandmother, who is a very good friend of Meg’s. Megan’s interest in turtles began when she went out with Meg, on the beach, one day, to see them inventory nests. She didn’t let the fact that she had never worked with sea turtles before stop her. In fact, she said, “I had almost no experience when I first started, so don’t let that deter you!”

Her favorite part of the whole program is working with the younger interns (which include Keona, Bernard, and myself), as well as getting to see the hatchlings towards the end of the summer. When asked why she decided to become a part of the program, Megan replied that she had an interest in biology and wanted to see if that was the field that she’d go into after college. She figured that helping with the turtle conservation was a good way to find out. In my opinion, she was right! Megan now plans to attend college in Wyoming and study wildlife biology.  Before she starts her college career, however, she is traveling to Bermuda through the Bermuda Exchange program that I will go into more details about next week.
