What You Can Do To Protect Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Keeping the loggerhead sea turtle safe depends on you. Please join Learning through Loggerheads in the following practices that will help provide a better environment for the loggerhead.

  • Do not remove markers, stakes or plastic cages you see on the beach. These are tools used by  researchers and volunteer groups to identify nests, protect them from predators and collect important scientific data.
  • Adult turtles avoid artificial light however, hatchlings are attracted to it. If you are staying in a beach home please keep your lights off at night. If you are on the beach at night do not use flashlights unless they have a red lens. Turtles do not see the red wavelength. You can take red tape and cover a clear lens to make a protected red wavelength beach light.
  • Please take your trash with you from the beach or if you are boating be sure to keep it from blowing out of the boat. Trash threatens all marine life because it can be mistaken for food or they can become entagled in it.

So, the more care you take, the more you help loggerhead sea turtles and their natural habitat. Thank you for respecting this majestic creature.
