LtL Summer Intern Program

LtL Summer Intern ProgramThis ten-week program provides high-school-age students a rewarding opportunity to learn about the eco-systems in their communities.   Intensive hands-on work with loggerhead turtles and other threatened and native species provides important job skills and the discipline to maintain the physical rigors of this kind of work.   The program's objectives include:  getting teens more physically active, more involved in applying math and science skills in the natural world, and more involved in supporting their local communities.  For the summer of 2012 our goal is to provide this life-shaping opportunity to eight youths.

Bermuda Exchange Program

Camp EdistoThis program is a collaborative effort between LtL and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.  LtL summer interns who excel in their work are qualified to take part in a two-week advanced program for young scientists on the island of Bermuda.  Professional staff members guide the interns in their work with sea animals, providing a stimulus for future explorations in natural science and potential careers in environmental disciplines. For the past two years LtL has sent one or two interns, and our goal for 2012 is to send three interns to this world-class event.

Camp Edisto

Bermunda Exchange Program Camp Edisto provides elementary and middle school students an opportunity to support the environment while learning.  The camp takes place on Edisto Island each July, and campers dive deeper into the eco-systems that surround them, interacting with live animals and taking part in fish and squid dissections.  Students learn to appreciate and become responsible stewards of their natural environment and the creatures with which we share our creeks, salt marsh, maritime forests, and ocean.

Natural Science Classroom

Natural Science ClassroomA single classroom experience can change a child's expectations about his future.  Sea turtle biologists bring field research to the classroom and students dive into the fascinating life cycle and biology of the loggerhead sea turtle.  Students follow the same protocol as a biologist who finds an injured sea turtle, using a dichotomous key to identify the species.  They become scientists as they work through simulations and make decisions about how to best protect the lives of sea turtles.

Nature Field Trips for School Children

Nature Field Trips for School ChildrenVisits to the salt marsh, maritime forests, and beach give children a chance to learn hands-on about these eco-systems and the animals and plants that make their homes there.  They take part in a shell scavenger hunt and learn about the sea creatures who left them behind, as well as   the cultural and natural history of the Lowcountry.  Walking and/or boat tours are customized for each class or group.

Build a Boat
Partnering with "Communities in Schools," LtL brings math alive through the Build a Boat program.   With a teacher/guide, students build a wooden boat as a team and then experience the joy of launching their craft.  The program builds pride and confidence in underprivileged youths.

LtL programs follow the guidelines of the South Carolina STEM (Standards of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields of study) hands-on learning experience.

FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES

"Ask an Expert" Lectures
Each one-hour to two-hour program covers a fascinating aspect of our fragile coastal eco-system and teaches how to be responsible stewards of the irreplaceable resources that provide home and sustenance to so many magnificent species.  Evening programs are aimed at adults, but are also appropriate for adolescents, and are available for community groups in the greater Edisto, Kiawah, and Charleston areas.

U 2 Can Be a Naturalist
LtL's programs continue to expand and our audience continues to grow.  Stay tuned for more new program announcements in 2012!  Or call us with your ideas - we can customize a program for any group size and experience.

DONATE NOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF LOWCOUNTRY YOUNGSTERS

"It was the best experience of my life" exclaimed young Megan to her parents.

She had just witnessed an exhilarating event--the emergence of sea turtle hatchlings from their sandy nest and their crawl down the beach to the sea, the first step in a life cycle that is 200 million years old.
